Undergraduate and postgraduate applications do not always follow the same process, and course requirements vary by university.

Study options and pathways
Undergraduate study
Most UK undergraduate applications are made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, commonly known as UCAS.
Postgraduate study
Many postgraduate applications are made directly to the university, with entry requirements and procedures determined by the individual program.
Foundation and pathway courses
Foundation or pathway programs may support students who need additional academic or English-language preparation before undergraduate or postgraduate study.
Progression from a foundation or pathway course to a degree is not automatic and depends on the provider's requirements.

For undergraduate study, applications are generally made through UCAS. Postgraduate applications are often made directly to the institution.

After receiving offers, complete the required acceptance process and any conditions attached to the selected place.

Prepare for the Student visa
Once the institution issues the required Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, confirm the current Student visa requirements and prepare the application.
Student visa
International students undertaking eligible higher-education study in the UK will generally need to use the Student visa route.
The student must have an appropriate offer from a licensed student sponsor and receive the required Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies before applying.
Financial, English-language and other documentary requirements depend on the student and course.
Working while studying
CURRENT GUIDANCE
Eligible students on full-time degree-level courses at qualifying higher education providers may currently work up to 20 hours per week during term-time. Eligibility and individual conditions apply.
Current UK rules allow eligible students studying full-time at degree level or above with a qualifying higher education provider to work up to 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time during eligible vacation periods.
Different rules apply to some courses and providers, and individual visa conditions must always be checked.
After graduation
The UK's Graduate visa can allow eligible students who successfully complete a qualifying UK course to remain after study.
The duration is changing.
Under current rules reviewed in September 2026, eligible bachelor's and master's-level applicants applying on or before 31 December 2026 may receive two years, while those applying from 1 January 2027 may receive 18 months.
Eligible PhD and other doctoral graduates may receive three years.
Graduate-route rules should be checked again before relying on them because immigration policy can change.
Planning costs and funding
Tuition, accommodation, insurance, travel and day-to-day living costs vary by institution, program, location and personal circumstances.
Students and families should build a realistic budget before committing to an international study plan. Scholarships, grants or other funding opportunities may be available depending on the institution, program and applicant, but availability and eligibility must be confirmed directly.
